Vanwest is organised by the friendly guys and gals at VW Bus T4 & T5 Magazine takes place at Warren Farm, Brean Sands in Somerset and this year was held over the weekend of 6th – 8th May 2016. Buzz arrived at midday on Friday to set up our stand with me (Marion) waiting till the girls had finished school as it is only about an hour and a half’s drive from our home in North Devon. This gave me more time to enjoy packing the motorhome. I love the fact that there is so much cupboard space for clothes, games, food, in fact everything that we would need.
The weather forecast was good, so we were all feeling excited and looking forward to the weekend camping in our Retro Tourer Motorhome.
From the minute we arrived on site we had an endless stream of people coming to chat with us and take a look at the vehicles we had on show. The Retro Tourer Commercial, Retro Tourer Motorhome and the brand new Retro Tourer Caravan, which Buzz towed behind his work truck, were all on display for everyone to have a good look at and ask questions. It could have been the sunshine or the beer, but maybe just the fact that the VW T4 & T5 owners are a bunch of really friendly, sound people, but it was a real pleasure meeting everyone.
After a delicious Buzz BBQ and s’mores for pudding we walked around the site in the balmy evening air. I think I embarrassed the girls by bopping along to the drum n bass/techno/dance music coming from the marquee, the dodgems and the DJ Bus. I loved it!
It is hard to say which of our Retro Tourer vehicles had the most interest. The brand new 3 berth Retro Tourer Caravan, with its calm pale blue interior was the most reasonably priced at only £9,500, but everyone had a look in all 3, maybe out of fascination for this new concept. It was useful to have Buzz’s work truck there as it shows how our builds begin and we had the basic Retro Tourer Commercial there as a blank canvas showing the floor area available, with just a pedestrian door and sales flap opposite.
We spoke with all sorts of different entrepreneurs who were interested in commissioning us to build them a Commercial Tourer from pet supplies to tattoo artist!
Finally of course we had our Retro Tourer Motorhome, which we slept and ate in. The motorhome is deceptive from the outside so it was great to get people to have a look inside as they remarked at how much space there is once you get in. I hope they didn’t open too many cupboard as we had quickly tidied away after breakfast, having slept in the motorhome overnight.
I also took some Lindy Bop dresses and skirts to sell. We like the vintage/retro style. The girls and I dressed up in our red and white polka dot skirts on the Saturday and twirled about in between showing people around the Motorhome.
Sunday afternoon saw a cruise to the beach – hundreds of VW T4’s & T5’s drove along the beach at Brean and parked up to enjoy the afternoon sunshine. The tide was out when we arrived – I hope they all moved by the time it came in again later in the day…
We will definitely be back again in 2017. Vanwest was a really well organised show – the Vanwest Crew always had a smile on their faces and there was a lovely, relaxed atmosphere all weekend. Thank you!
